Roger Craig was the engine of a dynasty. The versatile running back who powered the San Francisco 49ers to three Super Bowl titles in the 1980s redefined what a modern back could be - a runner and a receiver equally dangerous with the ball in his hands - and in February 2026 he took his rightful place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2026.
In 1985 he did something no player had ever done: he ran for 1,000 yards and caught passes for 1,000 more in the same season, finishing with 1,050 rushing yards and a league-leading 92 catches for 1,016 yards. His high-knee running style became one of the most recognizable images in football, and in Super Bowl XIX he became the first player ever to score three touchdowns in the game, keying a 38-16 rout.
The road ran through the University of Nebraska and a second-round selection in the 1983 NFL Draft. Over 11 seasons with the 49ers, Los Angeles Raiders, and Minnesota Vikings, Craig earned four Pro Bowl nods, was named the 1988 NFL Offensive Player of the Year after leading the league with 2,036 yards from scrimmage, and was chosen to the NFL's All-Decade Team of the 1980s. He finished with more than 13,000 yards from scrimmage and 73 touchdowns.
His drive never slowed. After football, Craig built a career in business development, became one of the sport's most devoted distance runners with dozens of marathons and half-marathons to his name, and took his message of discipline and perseverance to stages across the country. The bronze bust in Canton is the capstone on a life spent going over the top.
